Website Carbon, designed and developed by Wholegrain Digital, is a project created to raise awareness of the carbon emissions produced by visiting a webpage. Bringing that testing process one step closer to the websites themselves, and automating the testing of the whole website, is Website Carbon for WordPress, a WordPress plugin.
Website Carbon for WordPress helps you be aware of the emissions for your whole site by batch processing each post, and showing you the results right alongside in the WordPress post listing pages. Website Carbon for WordPress works with all public posts, including custom post types.
Additionally, the plugin supports exporting the results to CSV, including the post ID, the url, the CO2 emissions, and the post type.
Testing pages is as simple as heading to the tools page for Website Carbon for WordPress and clicking “test all pages”.
Since version 1.0.0, released on the 11th of May 2020, Website Carbon for WordPress has been updated once to version 1.1.0, adding two new features and fixing three bugs.
Theres still lots to work on, and new features to add, so look out for the updates coming soon. In the mean time, get to testing your site to learn the emissions generated by each page view, and ultimately understanding the impact that it has on the world around us.
